Who's the New Guy

Posted on Tue Oct 16th, 2018 @ 2:13am by Ensign Daniel Sheridan & Chief Petty Officer Aatke Yosal & Lieutenant Andrew Stokes

Mission: Episode 02: "The Telling"
Location: Main Engineering, USS Thames
Timeline: Mission Day 02, 0420

ON: [[Main Engineering, USS Thames, Mission Day 02, 0420]]

Daniel entered main engineering at a rather brisk pace. Part of him had expected to find the place turned upside down, or at least more active than usual, because of whatever had prompted the yellow alert. Instead, he was surprised to see things were more-or-less normal. Those who were on duty seemed to be going about their business as usual…as if nothing much had changed.

It made him pause.

The whole reason he was here was that Commander Whittemore had specifically wanted him to coordinate an assessment with engineering. Daniel had assumed that meant an engineering problem. Yet there didn’t appear to be anything there that would have required his attention.

He looked around the room and eventually located Aatke. Curiously, the chief petty officer was not at his usual place near the pool table, but rather tucked away in the alcove near the chief engineer’s office.

“Morning,” Daniel said as he approached.

“Morning, sir.”

Daniel noticed right away that Aatke’s attention wasn’t really focused on him at all. He turned, following the Bajoran’s sightline, to see one of the workstations along the wall was actively displaying sensor readings. At first, Daniel wasn’t sure what they were looking at. Then he saw the faint outlines of three or four objects and it started to click.

“Are those what I think they are?”

“If you’re thinking they’re some sort of alien vessels, sir, then yes,” Aatke replied, folding his arms across his chest, “that is exactly what they are.”

Now it made sense to Daniel why the commander had wanted him to work with engineering. People like Commander Thompson and Lieutenant Maor would undoubtedly be looking for anything that might pose a threat to the ship, the crew, or the colonists outside. Someone needed to come at it from the other direction, to better understand these ships and how they worked, so that maybe they could learn something about who they belonged to.

So much for sleep, he thought to himself. But in reality, the journey to the Thames via shuttle had been long in of itself. Stokes almost relished the thought of getting right to work. He'd been in his quarters stowing his small amount of carry on gear when the alert had been called.

Normally an officer would report to the CO upon arriving at a new assignment. But as he'd arrived very early in the morning he chose to report to the CO at the beginning of the morning watch. A plan that had now been altered with the call to report to stations. Despite him not having officially been announced as the new chief to the crew, he felt that he skills would be useful should there be a problem. With that in mind, he headed to Main engineering.

Rounding the corner he saw two members of the crew standing with their backs toward him. They were near the forward observation port looking toward one of the displays and hadn't heard him enter.

"Wow, it's almost eerie to be in this room and not hear that constant thrum of life. In a way, it's almost sad. Reminds me of a caged animal," Stokes continued, "One not being allowed to stretch her legs."

Walking over to the other crewmen, he looked at the screen they were watching.

"Is this the cause of the alert status?" Stokes asked. "It looks like a few small craft. No substantial power readings though," He entered a few commands on the panel causing the sensor profile to adjust to show heat signatures. "They are giving off a large heat profile, however. Did these craft enter the atmosphere using antigravs or thrusters, or was it a ballistic trajectory? Because they'd need some significant heat shielding to survive re-entry with these types of temperature readings."

The interjection caught Daniel off guard. He hadn’t noticed the lieutenant approach. Based on the look he was getting from Aatke, the chief was experiencing a similar reaction.
